I mixed the violet from a tin of enamel my father left behind, thinned it with a drop of turps, and spent a whole Tuesday on the H. Script is a bad-tempered trade. Too tight and it reads as a warning; too loose and it reads as a shrug. I wanted the loops to lean into each other like two people at a bus stop pretending not to wait for the same bus.

Dilys, who ran the launderette across the road, came to watch with a flask of tea she didn't offer me. "Forty years I've been married to that man," she said, nodding at Gwyn by the bins with his arms folded, "and he still thinks I'm joking when I say I'm not." Gwyn looked like a man who had just been handed the words and told they were his.

By Friday the flourishes were finished, little ticks and tails under each word. Gwyn came in alone the next morning and asked whether a sign could be painted to say something kinder. I told him paint keeps what it's given. He bought a tin of violet for himself and left the shutters as they were. Dilys's laughter carried across the street all afternoon. The O in Romantic still has a thumbprint in it, a small purple smudge where I leaned too early. I left it there. It was the only honest mark on the street.
