Horned helmet warrior with blood-stained mask

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A realistic tattoo shows a warrior in a horned, dark metal helmet with a pale metal face mask, one eye visible beneath the brow and red blood marks running down the mask. The figure wears a dark purple hooded cloak, and a sharp blade or spike edge runs diagonally across the lower part of the design. Smooth shading and vivid colour highlights on the armour and cloak give the piece strong depth against the dark background.

The swell has been working at the Teeth since noon, and you know the sea will give back whatever it wants before the tide turns. You are trimming the wick at the top of the tower when the beam sweeps across a dark shape wedged between two black rocks, and it does not shift with the water the way driftwood does.

You take the punt out at slack water with the oars wrapped in sacking. It is a helmet first, a great dark bowl of iron with two horns curving up and out like the prow of a longship. Below it hangs a faceplate the colour of old pewter, scored with long grooves, and down its centre run streaks that are still tacky under your thumb. The cloak beneath is purple wool, sodden to the colour of plums, and a blade-thin spar of metal lies under the weed like a rudder that has lost its boat. You tell yourself the streaks are rust. Rust does not stay wet for three days. You haul it up the seventy-two steps anyway, because the Board in Edinburgh will want a report, and because the visor seems to turn towards the lamp as you climb.

In the lamp room you lay it on the chart table, and the glass throws light across the faceplate so the horns appear to lift. You write in the log: one helm, one cloak, no name. The wind drops. At three o'clock the sea goes quiet, and from the gallery rail you hear something knock, once and then again, patient as a man at a door.

You go out with the lantern. On the rocks below, the punt is empty and the tide is turning. The mask you carried up is back where you found it, pale and facing the sky, and beside it sits a second helm, dark and dripping, its horns raised towards your light as though it has been waiting for you to come back down the stairs.
