Star Wars scene across a full back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A large back piece shows a Star Wars scene, with Darth Vader's helmet at the top beside a Death Star and a starry sky. A stormtrooper helmet sits at the centre, with TIE fighters, an AT-AT walker and a Boba Fett helmet below, all rendered with smooth grey shading and highlights. The background shifts from deep purple to red and pink, with the colour accents giving depth to the cosmic setting.

Dear Mum, the Regal finally had its new print delivered on Tuesday, six flat tins with gold lettering, and Mr Pollard made me carry every reel up the back stairs myself because he said a boy who cannot lift a tin cannot be trusted with a lamp. My forearms are still wrecked.

The trouble started with the third reel. It ran with a wobble, and when I held a frame up to the lamp I saw a white helmet with a black visor stretched across a bank of cloud, like someone had painted it on a sheet and then folded the sheet. Pollard looked at it for about a second and said leave it, the Saturday lot will not notice. The Saturday lot always notices.
So on Saturday night the house was full of kids in school jumpers, sticky to the arms of their seats, and when the grey walker came striding across the screen on its long legs, a boy in the front row stood up and pointed at it with his whole arm. Pollard cut the lamp, came down the aisle with his torch, and I expected a telling off. Instead he crouched beside the boy and said quietly that the walker had been to the snowy planet and was tired. The boy sat back down. Nobody else left.
Afterwards I swept up a month of ice cream wrappers and found a plastic Death Star from a Christmas cracker wedged under seat F4. I set it on the sill of the booth, where the beam from the lamp catches it every time the film runs, so it throws a small grey shadow across the wall. Pollard says it is bad luck to keep things that are not ours. I have not told him it is still there. Your loving son, Alan.
