Horned suited figure with watercolour splashes on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A horned animal head sits above a grey suit, striped tie and a cup held in one hand, with a burst of coloured splashes rising above the head. The linework is dark and sketched, with grey shading on the suit and loose, drip-like colour in blue, green, yellow, orange and purple. The design runs the length of a calf against a plain pale background.

The meeting had been going for forty minutes when Halvard Dunmore finally stopped pretending to take notes. Across the table, Mrs Okonedo was describing the quarterly figures in a voice like a kettle coming to the boil, and the ram's head on his shoulders had begun to itch under the collar of his grey suit. He had worn the head since Monday. Nobody in Accounts had mentioned it, which he took as a kind of approval.

He lifted his coffee cup, the one with the chipped rim that Priya from Facilities kept insisting was a health hazard, and watched the steam curl up through the fluorescent light. Somewhere behind his horns a colour went off like a firework, and a spray of blue and green and orange splashed across the ceiling tiles. Nobody looked up. Nobody ever looked up in this building. That was the whole reason the Board had hired him.
When Mrs Okonedo finally paused for breath, he set the cup down exactly on its ring and said, quite gently, that the projections were wrong because the sums assumed the river would keep behaving itself. Silence. Then the drips began, slow and bright, running down the wall beside the window in long purple streaks. Halvard smoothed his striped tie, rose, and walked out through the glass door without a word, leaving a faint green trail on the carpet that the cleaners would blame on the new intern.
In the lift he caught his reflection in the brushed steel and found that the head had gone quiet, the way a field does after the rain has stopped. He pressed the button for the roof.
