Sigrun had carved the last rune before the ice broke, and still Harald Ketilsson would not climb down from the stone. "You will freeze up there," she said. "The gulls will have your ears by morning."

"Then they will have ears that have heard more than yours," he said, but he came down, slow and stiff, and she saw that his beard had frozen into white points.

The skulls were the reason for the stone. Nine men had come over the ridge in autumn, sworn to Ketil's old enemies, and nine had gone home without their heads, or without the sense to keep them. Harald had stacked the bones into a cairn at the shore so the dead would know whose quarrel they had lost. Sigrun thought the cairn ugly. Harald thought it a kind of promise.

On the last night of the thaw he took his knife and cut the mark into the slab himself, a cross with a long tail, the same sign his mother had scratched above the byre door. "A man should leave something the rain cannot argue with," he said. He blew the grit off the stone, and for once he had nothing else to add.
