The last pony had been sold at Doncaster, and the big top smelt of wet canvas and nothing else when Ada went down to the horse lines at six. Mab was already awake, head over the half-door, her muzzle gone the colour of old ash. Someone had hung a willow hoop from the tack hook overnight, woven tight with waxed thread and strung with blue glass beads that clicked whenever the wind found its way under the canvas.

Uncle Ray had made it for her the winter the sawdust ran out of money. He said a dreamcatcher kept the bad ones tangled in the web until morning, when the sun burned them off like dew. Ada had laughed at him then. She did not laugh now, with the wagons already hitched in the lane and the handbills for the next town rolling off the press in the back of the lorry.

Three feathers hung from the base, grey as a pigeon's breast, plucked from the moult of the old hen who had ridden in the parade. Ada tied them on with the last length of red cord. Mab shifted her weight, blew softly through her nose, and looked past her toward the empty ring where the band was packing away the drum.

Ada led her out at last, the hoop swinging against her ribs. At the gate Mab stopped and turned her head, the way she used to when the lights came up, and the web caught the first grey light and held it. Ada pulled the flap closed behind them. Whatever had been circling all night could stay in the net until the sun came round to fetch it.
