Tobias had nine days to finish the copy before the Board's man came up from Ely, and no time to redraw a parish. He sat with the spoiled corner under the lamp and resented it until the shapes began to look like something other than a mistake.

But the triangle the lines made, where the drainage cuts met the old sea wall, was true to the bearings, and the beast sat inside it as if it had always been the reason for the angle. He took his finest nib and stippled the mane one dot at a time, so the hair would read as wind moving over reeds.

He unfurled it across the table and braced for the complaint. Instead the man leaned close, traced the horn with one finger, and asked where the water went when the sluices were shut. Tobias said he did not know. The man tapped the blue splatter and said, "Then she drinks there, and we'll leave her be."
