Moon, pines and hills in a rope frame

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The design shows dark pine trees on the left, a full moon and a small reclining figure on a hill, and a zigzag line at the lower left. The shading is built from dense stippled dots, with solid black areas in the trees and the rope border. The black ink is set against soft grey skin in a close, centred composition.

Dear Tom,

The moon came up over Crow Stile last night so full and so close that I thought the pines would catch fire. I sat on the step of the hut with the kettle going cold beside me and counted the trees on the ridge the way Dad taught us, one for every year he was away at sea. I got to forty-one before I lost count, which is about right for the ones that have survived the storms.

The rope is still on the winch. Mr Gwilym said we should cut it loose before the frost, but I told him I'd do it myself when you come up in March. You always said the haul line was the best thing about the place, that a man could hang his whole weight on it and it would still hold. I left the zigzag of the old ore track where it is too, the one that goes up past the spoil heaps. Nobody uses it now, but I walk it most evenings to see where the fog sits.

Last Thursday I found a man lying flat on the hill above the quarry, arms out, looking straight up. He said he'd been there since dawn and didn't see the point of getting up. I didn't ask him why. I brought him a flask and sat with him until the light went, and we watched the moon climb over the pines without saying much at all. When he finally stood, he thanked me and walked down the old track whistling, and I thought of you.

Come up when the lambs are on the hill. Bring the good torch. I'll leave the door unlocked and the rope tied off.

Love, Nell
