A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Gideon had the lantern in one hand and the mare's lead rope in the other when the first bells of the cathedral started up across the water, and Mab, who had hauled the Ardleigh coach for eleven years, stopped dead on the cobbles as if the sound had a hand on her bridle. He did not swear. He had learned on the Leeds road that swearing only made a horse think it was right to be frightened.

The yard behind Quarry Lane was black except for the window of the tack room, where a paraffin heater ticked. Gideon set the lantern on the mounting block and leaned his forehead against Mab's neck. Her mane was grey at the roots and dark at the tips, and in the lamplight it fell from the crest of her head like something poured, curling down either side of her face until the two halves met beneath her jaw. Old Peg Fenn used to say a mane like that was a kind of shelter, and that you could tell a good animal by how easily her hair could be combed away from her eyes.

He had not come out to think about Peg. He came out to walk the mare round the square once, the way she liked, so the bells would stop being a thing she carried. They went round twice. On the third pass Mab lifted her head towards the dark gap between the warehouses, where the river showed in pieces, and the street lamp caught the line of her profile, clean as a pencil stroke against the brick.

Gideon unclipped the lead, let her go, and watched her walk back into the yard on her own, the mane swinging out and falling again like a gate that knew its hinges.
