The mare came up on the freight lift from the hydroponic decks with her hooves wrapped in sacking, and Dorothea Vance knew before she unwrapped them that the old shoes would be worn to nothing. She worked the forge with the gold-glass light slanting across the anvil and the recycled steel ticking as it cooled. Her apprentice, a quiet boy named Tobiah who had come up from the water works, held the mare's foreleg with the care of someone holding a bird. He asked her why the shoes had to be open at the top. Dorothea said her grandmother had kept a forge on the lower ring and bent every one that way, so the luck could drop down onto whoever walked beneath. Tobiah said that sounded like a waste of luck. She told him luck was mostly a matter of where you stood.

When the last nail was clinched, she dragged the crate to the doorway and stood on it to hang the finished shoe above the lintel, the way her grandmother had hung hers. The words stamped along the rim were small and the letters had been pressed in a hurry, but the gap at the top was clean and pointed at the ceiling vents. Below it, the mare shifted onto four new feet and clicked off down the corridor toward the lift.

Dorothea wiped her hands on her apron and went back to the coals. Tobiah stood where the light fell, and she did not tell him to move.
