Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a horseshoe shaped into an infinity loop, with small dots marking the nail holes. The design uses bold black outlines with grey shading on the loops and a clean, simple composition. The tattoo sits on the ankle against bare skin, with a plastic-covered surface with printed text in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mare had thrown a shoe on the Tuesday, and by Thursday Mr Pardoe was calling it a judgement. He pulled a rasp from the bag and worked at the heel while the mare blew steam into the cold. Then he did a thing I didn't expect. He took a second shoe, heated it till it glowed like a coal in the hedge, and bent it round on itself, pulling the two ends across until the metal looped over and under like a ribbon tied by someone who wanted it to stay. He said that was how you made a lucky thing that would not come off. Anything with no beginning and no end, he said, the luck has nowhere to run.

I asked him if it worked. He spat into the ditch and said that depended on who was holding the lantern. Then he hammered the last nail home, drove the hot metal into the frost, and handed me the loop to carry back to the forge. It was still warm when I pushed it into my coat pocket, and the mare, for the first time all week, put her head down and went quiet.
