The ferry from Brennock leaves at half past six, and you are the only passenger who has brought a bear. He is tan wool gone grey at the ears, one arm restitched in green thread by a grandmother who has since died, and he rides in the crook of your elbow as though he has paid for the crossing. The deckhand laughs at him. You let him.

On the island there is a headland where the gorse grows low enough to see the sea over, and the old lighthouse keeper once told you that every spring a small red butterfly comes up from the rocks and rests on whatever is closest to the path. Nobody has ever seen where they come from. You have stopped expecting to see it. You sit on the wall with the bear beside you and wait anyway, the way you once waited for the tide tables to be wrong.

The butterfly arrives at eleven minutes past nine, which is too early and too precise, and lands on the bear's raised paw. It stays there while the light turns from pewter to gold. You think of the cold coffee on the mainland, the letter you never sent, the stitching coming loose at his shoulder. The butterfly lifts, circles twice, and goes not out to sea but up the hill towards the cottage with the blue door.

You follow it. Behind the door, on a scrubbed table, someone has set out two cups and a jar of honey, and the bear, you realise, has been looking for this kitchen all along.
