Interlocking triangle geometry on a wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo of nested triangles forming a symmetrical star-like geometric motif sits on the inner wrist and forearm. Solid lines form the inner triangles while dotted lines trace the outer shapes, and the design is rendered entirely in black ink with no shading. The hand rests on a white surface, with a blue chair and orange objects blurred in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third morning the sun had cleared the eastern wall and our flax cords had gone slack with dew, so Ankhu tied the last knot himself and told me to stop breathing on the stakes. We were laying out the floor of the shrine at Nebet-Ra. The master had drawn the plan on a flake of limestone, then turned it face down in the dust so no one could copy it, which was his habit whenever he was proud.

The plan was two great triangles, one pointing up and one pointing down, locked through each other like the fingers of a clasped hand. Inside them sat smaller triangles, and inside those a smaller still, until the centre was a point no wider than a barley grain. The master wanted the inner lines cut deep and filled with lapis. The outer lines, he said, were not to be cut at all. We were to mark them with a bone awl, one dot every width of a thumb, and let the rains take them in time.

I asked Ankhu why a builder would spend a day on lines he meant to lose. He wiped red ochre from his knuckles and said the dots were the shape of what the shrine would ask of the ground, not of the stone. The walls would stand because the outer shape pressed in from every side, and nobody would ever see it doing so. Then he pressed the last dot in with his thumb and went to find water.

When the rains came in the second month, I walked the floor at dusk. The lapis had held in the inner triangles, bright as a wet eye. The dotted lines had already softened into the mud, all but one, where the master had stepped across the outer edge. There a small pale point remained, sitting exactly at the centre of the star, and nothing had yet washed it away.
