Colour tattoo of an ornate hot air balloon with a black script word reading freedom on the thigh, in a traditional style.

Hot air balloon and freedom script on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A hot air balloon with a patterned, mandala-like envelope in teal, pink and green sits on the thigh, with a black rope line trailing down to the script word freedom. The balloon is filled with bold colour and shaded panels, while the rope and lettering use clean, even black linework. The tattoo is framed against blurred skin and a soft outdoor background, with a person in a teal top and denim shorts partly visible at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Tobias had been painting the same lily for three days when the balloon came down in the water meadow below the wall. He heard it before he saw it, a roar like a kettle set on a stove too big for it, then the goats bawling, then a shout from the lane. Abbot Clement had forbidden the novices to run, so Tobias set down his brush with great care and walked to the gate at the pace of a man carrying an egg.

The envelope lay across the grass like a fallen tent, teal and rose and green, stitched with the same scalloped borders he had spent eleven years learning to draw in gold leaf. A young man in a cap was rubbing his shin and laughing, and a woman was working a rope free from the hawthorn. On the side of the wicker basket someone had written a single word in marker, and Tobias read it twice before he understood it was English and meant nothing to the rule of St Benedict at all.

Abbot Clement came down the lane with his hands tucked in his sleeves and studied the great striped shape for a long time. "The rule says nothing about balloons," he said at last, "which is a mercy, because I would have had to write one." He looked at the trailing rope, then at Tobias, and went back up the hill without another word.

That night Tobias returned to the psalter he had been asked to finish. Instead of the border he drew the balloon in the corner, its envelope in the blue he had mixed for the sea, and beneath it a black line that dropped from the basket and curled into the margin. At its end he lettered the word from the basket in his small, careful hand. In the morning the abbot paused at his desk, read the page, and turned it gently back to the psalm, leaving the line where it was.
