Mountain range tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a mountain range runs horizontally along the side of the ribs, with peaks of varying height outlined in thin black linework. Grey shading fills the faces of the peaks to give them dimension. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame against warm skin, with a hand, ring and loose knitted sweater partly visible above it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm hands you the ledger on your first morning and tells you the mules will not climb past the lower pasture after October, so the snow count must be made on foot. You take the pencil he offers, a stub worn down to the length of a thumb, and you set out before the bell.

The range stands across the valley like a row of broken teeth, five peaks in all, the middle one pale where the rock is bare. You learn them by their shadows. The eastern peak throws its shade across the chapel roof before the others have woken. By the second week you can name them without looking: Old Grey, the Widow, the Shoulder, the one the brothers call Nun's Tooth, and the last, which has no name because nobody has ever stood on it.

On the twelfth day cloud fills the saddle and you stop, certain you have lost the path. Then the sun breaks through and lights the ridge in sharp grey planes, and you see the bell tower sitting exactly beneath the Widow, a thin thread of smoke rising straight up from the kitchen. You write the count in the ledger: four peaks clear, one lost to weather. Brother Anselm reads it by the stove and nods.

He taps the empty fifth column. "And this one?" You tell him you did not reach it. He says that is the only honest sentence in the book, and closes it. That night you sketch the range in the margin from memory, and the lines come easily, as though the mountains had been waiting to be copied. The pencil leaves a grey smudge where your thumb rests, and you leave it there.
