Hot air balloon and journey banners flash
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a striped hot air balloon with a basket and rope, a central anchor, and two banners carrying the lettering IT'S NOT ABOUT THE DESTINATION and IT'S ABOUT THE JOURNEY, with JOURNEY on a larger banner at the base. Clouds and radiating lines frame the balloon, drawn with uniform black linework and hatched areas for shading. The design is rendered in black ink on white paper with no colour and a plain, centred composition.

Dan Pritchard had spent twenty minutes by the crisp table pretending to read name badges, which was how he learned that Gemma Oakes now sold conservatories in Stockport and still owed him a tenner from the Llandudno trip in Year Nine. "You're still in Hadleigh, then," she said, reading his badge as if it might change.

He was. He had the same bungalow on Crane Road, the same shifts at the sorting office, and a beagle called Biscuit who waited at the front window for him every evening. Across the hall, people kept using the word adventure as though it were a dish they had ordered and could not quite afford. Someone had strung a paper hot air balloon from the rafters, its basket painted in the old school colours, and Dan kept glancing up at it.
"Remember Mr Ellery's geography lessons?" Gemma said, following his gaze. "He used to say the destination was just where you stopped sending postcards."
"He said that about everything."
"Did he?" She laughed. "You had that poster above your radiator for three years. Round the world on a balloon. Nobody ever saw you leave Hadleigh."
At eleven the caretaker began switching off lights. Dan unhooked the balloon from its hook, found the loose string and the pebble someone had tied to its end, and carried it out to the car park. The night smelled of cut grass and wet tarmac. He held the pebble up, let the balloon swing, and watched it pull against his fingers, straining towards the streetlamps, while the rope stayed in his hand.
