Hot air balloon with forest scene on calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A hot air balloon fills most of the calf, with its envelope filled by a night scene of a crescent moon, stars, pine trees and mountain peaks. The basket below carries a small cabin and a band of mandala-like ornament, all built from fine stippled dots and hatched lines. The work is black and grey, with the rounded outline and the balloon's panels giving the composition a clear, centred shape against the skin.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the fire, because this is the bit where the balloon came down on Hollin Ridge with the cabin still hanging in its basket and a dog barking from the porch. Nobody saw it arrive. We only heard the rope creaking through the pines, like a gate wanting oil, and then the silk slid over the treetops, grey as wet slate, with a crescent moon stitched into one panel and a scatter of stars beneath it.

Mr Ansell the cooper went up first with his lantern. Inside the cabin the kettle was still warm, two cups sat on the table, and a pair of boots steamed by the stove. Nobody aboard. Just the smell of woodsmoke and the mountains groaning behind the ridge, as if they were shifting in their sleep.
Nell Ansell, who was nine and had no respect for anybody's rules, climbed the rope ladder that hung from the basket and came back down with a folded map. It showed a valley no one in Hollin had ever walked to, with a river drawn in silver ink and a note in the margin: 'Leave the stove lit for whoever comes after.'
They did. The next morning the cabin was gone and the balloon was a dot above the peaks, and on Nell's windowsill sat a tin mug nobody had owned, full of rainwater. So when you see a lamp on the ridge at night, don't wave and don't go running. Just put the kettle on, in case they come back for their tea.
