Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hot air balloon with a segmented envelope, a banded rim, a basket and suspension ropes, shown in profile. The outline is drawn in fine black lines, and the envelope and shadows are built up with stippled dots that give soft tonal shading. The image is black and grey on pale skin, with the tattoo centred on the forearm against a dark background.

Don't crane your neck at the sky yet, my friend, you'll only get sand in your eyes and miss the good part. Sit down by the water jar. The road to Qasr Hamra runs ninety miles straight as a surveyor's lie, and in the year the wells failed, a ballooner called Samir Oakes came down it with a silk envelope folded in a mule cart and a wicker basket he had bought from a dead Frenchman's widow in Alexandria for less than the price of the mule.

He filled the bag at dawn, when the air sits heavy and still. The envelope swelled in segments, banded at the rim with a ribbon of cloth that the wind lifted and snapped like a flag at a wedding. Fine ropes went taut from the basket to the rim, and every one of them sang a little. The drivers stopped their camels and shaded their eyes, and the children counted the specks of shadow on the silk the way you count stars when you cannot sleep, because the cloth was dotted dark wherever the sun did not reach.
Then the wind turned west, toward the mountains, and the balloon began to climb faster than a man could hold it. Samir cut the sandbags loose one by one. The first went down like a stone, the second like a sigh. Then he threw out the ledger he kept in the basket, the one with every debt the caravan owed him written in pencil. The pages scattered over the road like pale moths, and a girl in a blue headscarf ran after them, gathering each one as it settled.
By noon the balloon was a speck above the ridge. The girl's father, who had lost a camel to Samir's fee the year before, sat down in the road and laughed until he coughed. Everything he owed was lighting his stove that night, page by page, and nobody on that road ever saw the ballooner come down.
