Hot air balloon with wanderlust script

Mixed · Flash

A hand-drawn hot air balloon with a teal and muted brown watercolour wash, outlined in fine black ink with a scalloped band around the canopy. The word wanderlust is written in small black script to the lower right of the basket. The design is centred on a plain cream background with generous empty space around it.

The Bramleys are nearly ready. We've been picking since the Thursday before the bank holiday, filling crates faster than the lorry can carry them off. Your old room smells of wasps and sweet cider. I've left the window open for the swallows, which are gathering on the wire now, dozens of them, chattering like they're planning something.

Yesterday the balloon came down in the lower field, right by the gate. Nobody was in the basket. Only a sack of windfalls and a card in careful capitals: TAKE ONE FOR THE ROAD. So I did. I climbed the stile with a Discovery in each pocket and sat on the wall until the light went orange, thinking about how you always wanted to see where the air went once it stopped being ours.

Come home at the end of the month. Bring that stubborn map of yours. I'll keep the apples in the cold store and the gate unlatched. Love, Ros.
