Hourglass with lighthouse and ship on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
An hourglass with a dark cap and base and a gold-toned frame sits across the forearm. The upper bulb shows a lighthouse beside calm water under an orange sunset, and the lower bulb shows a sailing ship on a pale surface, all rendered with smooth shading and glass-like highlights. The palette combines warm oranges and blues with black and gold, and the design fills the centre of the frame against a dark background.

Dear Maud, the sand has got into everything since the storm, including the tea caddy and the lining of my good coat, so forgive the smudges. Mr Tregarthen at the boarding house has finally let me into the upstairs room where the old glass lives. He keeps it under a sheet like a sleeping dog. Turned out to be an hourglass, near as tall as my forearm, with brass corners gone green at the edges and a cap as black as a widow's bonnet.

The upper bulb holds the Point light, the one you complained about last August, shining out over water so still it might have been poured. The lower bulb is the strange part. Someone painted a three-masted schooner inside it, shrunk to the size of a thumbnail, her sails grey as dishwater. Tregarthen says it was his father's ship, the Morwenna, lost off the Hook in the year the glass was made, and that the sand runs down onto her deck every hour so she never quite sinks and never quite comes home.
I asked him whether he had ever turned it over. He looked at me the way Mother used to look at a pudding that would not set, and said that was a question for a sailor, not a lodger. So I have decided I am a sailor, and tomorrow, if the wind holds, I will take the crab boat out past the Hook and see whether the light is still shining where the painter put it.
Keep the lamp lit for me. Your loving brother, Tom.
