Fishing figure on a dock in a sunset landscape
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A small figure stands on a wooden dock at the bottom of the design, holding a fishing rod out over calm water. Behind them, soft hazy mountains, dark trees and a glowing orange and yellow sky fill the rest of the scene. The shading is smooth and painterly, with warm reds, oranges, greens and browns blending across the sky and water.

Dad had painted the end of the dock the colour of rust the summer before, and by the time Tom came down the path with the tackle box, the boards were already warm under his bare feet. Across Lenning Tarn the mountains had gone soft and blue at their edges, the way they did once the heat broke, and above them the sky was doing something no one in the village would believe without seeing it.

Grandad Eli sat on an upturned crate with his cap pushed back and said nothing for a long time. Tom cast twice, let the lure sink into the orange reflection, and watched the rings spread out until they touched the reeds on the far bank. The dark trees over there leaned in the way they always did, as if they wanted a look at the water too. Every evening the lake took a little of the light and gave it back, and Grandad said that was the only honest trade he knew.
A fish rose somewhere near the middle, a brief silver flick that could have been anything. Tom reeled in fast, too fast, and the line came up heavy with weed and a single red lure gone pale from a hundred other evenings. Grandad laughed until he coughed, and Tom laughed with him, and then they both went quiet.
When Tom finally looked down, the whole sunset was under his feet, the clouds upside down and the mountains hanging in the dark wood of the water. He lifted the rod and the sky broke into a hundred pieces that drifted back together slowly. He stayed on the dock until the colour drained out of the hills and the boards were only grey, and Grandad was still there, just a shape on the crate, waiting for the next cast.
