Lighthouse and pink flower on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A striped lighthouse with a glowing lantern room stands inside an oval rope frame, set against a blue sky fading to orange and pink clouds at dusk. Below it sits a pink five-petalled flower with a yellow centre and green leaves. The shading is smooth and blended in the sky, with bold outlines around the lighthouse and flower.

You have been counting the stripes since the pilot boat cleared Carrow Bay: twelve black bands winding up the tower like a barber's pole that has lost its nerve. Ada Lusk swore the number changed with the weather, and you laughed at her across the kitchen table the night before you sailed. Now the sky over the headland has gone the colour of a bruised peach, and the lantern room sits dark at the top of it.

The engine coughs twice and dies just beyond the bar. Tennant wants to run for the north channel, but you take the tiller yourself, because the light is supposed to be there and it isn't, and a boat that cannot see its mark is only a boat waiting to be broken. Spray comes over the bow in sheets. You hold the course by the dark bulk of the tower and the iron fog bell creaking somewhere on the wind, and you think about nothing except the next swell.
Then the lamp catches. It comes slowly, the way a match takes in damp hands, then all at once, a white throw of light sweeping the water and laying a path straight to the mole. Somebody has climbed the hundred and twelve steps in this gale. You learn later it was Ada herself, seventy-one years old, with a flask in one pocket and a pink mallow pressed between the pages of her ledger from the garden she never let go to seed.
The boat sits safe at the quay by midnight. Tennant hands you a tin cup of tea and says nothing. On the logbook page, under the day's date, Ada has written one line in pencil: Light lit. Count the stripes again tomorrow. You do, and there are still twelve, and you have never been so glad to be wrong.
