Hand pierced by arrows on a calf
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown upright, with its fingers reaching upwards, and two arrows pass through it diagonally. Fine sketchy linework and grey shading build up the hand, while thin circle and triangle guide lines run across the design. The piece is in black and grey ink and sits on the calf against a blurred indoor background.

The surveyor's daughter, Ilse, had been told the map of the Vellan marshes was finished, and so it was, except for the one circle she kept redrawing at the edge of the parchment. Her father called it a hand's width of nonsense. She called it the place where the water stopped agreeing with the ground.

Her compass was brass, and the needle had a bent tooth that caught on every second turn. She spent a whole winter in a reed hut with a lamp and a stack of linen-backed paper, drawing triangles between the three bell towers of Harrow Lode until the lines met at a point nobody could walk to. The fishermen said a boy had once tried to reach it on stilts and come back with his shins black from the peat. Ilse wrote this down. She did not write down that she had dreamed of an upright hand standing in the mud, fingers open, like a signpost that had forgotten which road it pointed to.
In the thaw, a courier from the crown arrived with a sealed order to remove the circle from every map in the district. Ilse took the order, read it twice, and then went out with two arrows she had carved from ash, the fletching still pale. She set the first one through the paper where the circle was drawn, and the second through the first, the way you pin a letter to a door you mean to come back to. The courier watched her do it and said nothing. In the morning the marsh had shifted by a finger's width, and the hut was standing on dry ground that had not been there before.
