Howling wolf and pines on a full arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf sits on a rocky ledge, head raised as if howling, with a pale moon behind it and tall pine trees rising on the left. Below the wolf, rocks, foliage and leaves fill the lower part of the sleeve, which wraps the upper arm and forearm. The work uses soft grey shading and fine detail in the fur and foliage, with no colour ink, and the sleeve is photographed against a plain black top.

The wolf had been howling at the same ridge for three nights before Maud Carrow understood it was not calling for a mate. It was calling for the one that had gone missing from the Cwm, the grey shape she kept glimpsing at the edge of the pines and never at the edge of her lamp.

She was a lambing woman, not a hunter, and her father had kept a rifle in the dresser for thirty years that he never once loaded. On the fourth night she took the lantern up past the last wall, past the stunted rowans where the rock broke into terraces like stacked slates, and sat on the cold ledge to wait. The moon slid out from behind a cloud the colour of wet slate and laid its light over everything. The pines stood up the slope like a congregation holding its breath.

The wolf came out of the trees at the foot of the scree and stopped. It looked at her, then at the moon, then at her again, and lifted its head. Its howl did not go down into the valley. It climbed until it found the rock face opposite, then came back changed, two voices where there had been one.

Maud answered it badly, with her mouth pressed too close to her collar. Below, a ewe that had bleated all week went quiet, and the dog at the lower farm barked once and fell silent too. By morning the grey shape was gone and the lambs were all counted, and the flock on the upper pasture stopped bunching at the wall, as though something out on the rocks had finally shown them where the hill ended.
