Moonlit pine forest and figure on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large sleeve-style tattoo runs down the forearm, showing a night scene with a full moon, wispy clouds and scattered stars above a dark line of pine trees. Below, a reflective water surface leads to a seated female figure with long hair, shown from behind. The work uses smooth, soft gradients and fine detail in black and grey, with the light of the moon creating the main highlights.

The boat was late again, so Agnes Hebb took off her shoes on the shingle and waded out until the cold reached her knees. Behind her the pines of Sallow Wood stood black against the ridge. Above them the moon hung so full that the children of Harrow Cross swore they could make out the lamplighter's ladder on its face.

Her brother Tom had rowed across to Kettle Bay on the Monday, promising to be back for the Saturday market with flour and a new pair of boots for her. Nobody had seen him since. The postmistress said the mill road flooded in March. The minister said the Lord kept count of ferrymen. Agnes said nothing to either of them. She sat on the old stone jetty and kept her eyes on the water, where the moon lay in a broken road all the way to her feet.
Near midnight a light came along the far shore. It was too steady for a lantern carried in a boat and too low for a motorcar on the lake road. She stood up and waited. The light stopped beside the drowned willow where the ferry had gone down in March, and a voice carried over the water, clear as a bell, calling her name the way Tom always had when he was tired of waiting for her to come down.
She knew the lake did not give back what it took. Her grandmother had told her that much, the way you tell a child the stove is hot. Still Agnes waded out past her knees, past her waist, and when the water closed over her hair the moon went on shining on the surface without a single ripple, as though it had been waiting for her too.
