Howling wolf over mountains on the chest

Realism · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A large wolf with its head raised and mouth open in a howl dominates the upper chest, shaded in greys and white with detailed fur texture. Below it, snowy mountains, pine trees and the black silhouette of a second wolf sit within loose blue and purple splashes, with a pale blue moon behind the head. Colour is mainly blue and purple washes against grey shading, and the composition fills the chest from the collarbone to the centre of the sternum.

Dear Dad,

The ice came off the cut on Tuesday, and Mr Ashworth at the top lock says the Pennine tops have had snow since Sunday, white right down to the pines above the reservoir. I tied the barge up below Hebden last night so the cabin would stay warm, and I sat out on the front deck with the tiller lashed and a flask of your bad tea, waiting on the moon. It came up over the ridge like a coin someone had dropped in the water.

Then the wolf started. I know, I know. There are no wolves in Yorkshire, and Mrs Pickering in the chandlery will tell you the same, but it was a long sound, rising and breaking, and it came down off the slope the way you described the howl in Dawson, the one you said you could feel in your back teeth. A second voice answered from the trees, lower, and then the two of them just went on, passing it between them until the lock gates groaned in the wind.

I didn't go looking. I thought about you, sat in that cabin with the stove going, and I thought about the day you handed me the tiller and said the water would keep me honest. It has. This morning there was a track in the frost beside the towpath, big as a hand, and it ran straight to the pines and stopped, as if whatever made it had simply decided to be somewhere else.

Come home in spring. I'll have the roof painted, and the blue on the cabin side is the colour you wanted in the end.

Love, Nell
