Wolf and moonlit mountains on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic wolf stands in grass on the upper arm, facing slightly to the side, with a full moon, clouds and a mountain range behind it. The fur and shading are built up with soft greys and fine detail, and the background fades into smoky clouds. The image is a close, straight-on photo of the arm against a black sleeve, with the wolf filling the centre of the frame.

Behind the chandlers, the mountains stood black against a moon so full it looked lacquered, and the clouds that wrapped their shoulders had gone the colour of old pewter.

It did not hurry. It walked the length of the slipway the way a man walks past a shop he has no intention of entering, pausing once where the nets were hung to dry, its ruff lifting in the wind off the water. You had been told all your life that wolves had left this country before your grandmother was born. Your father had said so across the table, and Mrs Penhallow had said so at the post office, and both of them were usually right about everything except the weather.
You did not move. Neither did it. The moon went on climbing, and somewhere out past the breakwater a bell buoy rang its slow, ordinary note.
When it finally turned and climbed the path back towards the high grass, it left no prints on the wet stone, only a faint salt shine where it had brushed the rail. In the morning you went down to the slip with a bucket and found the nets whole and the fish untouched. Only the rail was wet, and it was not raining.
