Howling wolf and moon on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A wolf with its head raised and mouth open in a howl fills the lower half of the design, with bare, leafless branches reaching up the left side. Behind it sits a large, glowing blue moon with soft purple and teal shading across a dark sky. The wolf is rendered in dark grey and black with fine fur detail and amber eyes, while the sky and moon use vivid blues and purples, and the same tattoo is photographed from two angles side by side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flour was still warm in the sacks when the wolf came down off Cold Ash hill for the second time that month. Tobias Venn, who had kneaded dough in the bakehouse on Mill Lane since he was nine, heard it first through the shutters: a long note that rose like smoke from the ovens and then broke off short. He did not go to the door. He lit the second oven instead.

His mother had told him the old rule. A wolf that howls under a baker's moon is asking for the loaf that is left over, so you give it the burnt ends and the crusts, never anything whole. Tobias had never believed her. But the wolf had taken a child's shoe from the step and returned it neatly the next morning, and the moon over the ridge that night was so wide and blue that the bare ash trees looked drawn in ink.

At four he carried the tray of scorched rolls out to the yard and set it on the wall. The howl came again, closer, and when he looked up the wolf stood on the stile with its head thrown back and its throat working, the moon behind it like a lamp someone had forgotten to put out. Its eyes caught the bakehouse light and turned amber. He did not run.

When he came back inside, the rolls were gone and the tray was clean as a plate. Beneath it lay a single long grey hair, which he kept in the tin beside his mother's recipe. The bread that morning rose higher than it ever had, and the village said it was the best in the valley, though nobody asked why he had started singing to the dough before dawn. Every day after, he left the crusts on the wall and sang to the moon until the sky went pale.
