Howling wolf with swirling linework on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small wolf head is shown in profile with its muzzle raised as if howling. Its body fades into flowing, curling lines that trail downward and end in spirals. The work is mostly thin black linework with light grey shading on the head and upper body, set against bare skin on a lightly lit wrist.

The frost had been on the salt pans three weeks when the herald at Ostry Keep finally admitted the king was lost in the fen. The queen sent you because you were the only mapmaker who had walked the mire at night. She gave you a lantern with a cracked horn and a sealed letter you were not to open.

The fen did not hold still. Reeds shifted behind you and the black water kept its own counsel. On the third night the mist thickened to the colour of wet ash, and you heard a wolf, though no wolf had lived east of the causeway in your grandmother's time. Its howl did not rise the way howls do. It poured out thin and silver, and wherever it went the mist curled into loops, then spirals, like ink lifting off a bad map.
You followed those lines. Each curl drew you further from the rot, and the ground firmed under your boots until you stood on a dry causeway stone ringed with a hundred unlit candles. The wolf sat at the far end of the stones, muzzle lifted, grey along the shoulders where the mist had worn its coat thin. It did not look at you. It was calling the king's hounds home.
The king came up out of the reeds an hour later, cursing and muddy, his crown in his fist. He asked how you had found him. You opened the queen's letter after all and showed him the blank page inside. She had not known what to write. You folded it back into the lantern case and did not tell him the wolf never once turned round to see whether you were coming.
