Fine line profile tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms a profile of a face, with a second curved line rising beside it that suggests a second head or shape. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is entirely in black ink on pale skin. It is centred on the inner forearm just above the wrist, with a dark leather surface behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift in Kestrel House had been out since Tuesday, so Maureen Tolley climbed the stairwell to the ninth floor with a bag of shopping in one hand and a cat carrier in the other. Inside, a grey tabby called Biscuit was complaining in a voice like a gate in the wind. She had found the animal on the walkway after the storm, soaked and furious, and nobody on the estate would own it.

On the landing she stopped at 9C, because the carrier had begun to thump against her knee. The door was propped open with a bucket. An old man in a cardigan stood in the gap, looking at the cat as if it owed him rent. He said its name was Hobbs, that it had gone missing in March, and that his wife had been the one who fed it. Then he looked at the carrier for a long time and said nothing at all. Biscuit pressed her face against the wire mesh, the line of her ear lifted high, and the old man made a small noise that could have been a laugh.

They drank tea at his kitchen table with the radio on low. He showed her a shoebox of envelopes his wife had drawn on, every one covered in biro cats, all of them shown in profile, each one drawn in a single run of the pen without lifting it from the paper. He said she could do a cat in four seconds flat. Maureen did not say that she had only ever managed a kettle.

When she left, he pressed a folded envelope into her hand. Inside was a cat with its head tilted, drawn in one unbroken line. The lift was still broken when she came down, so she took the stairs again, one hand on the rail and the carrier quiet against her hip.
