Minimal cat outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms a simple outline of a cat seated in profile, with pointed ears, whiskers and a curling tail, and a small dot marks the eye. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is set small in the centre of a pale forearm against a dark background and a light grey top.

Mind the fire, and don't interrupt me the way the miller's boy did. In the kingdom of Carrowmere, where the river ran uphill on feast days, the king commissioned a map of his realm drawn in one unbroken line of ink. The surveyor, Oswin Pell, was told he could never lift his pen, for a border with a gap in it was a border a neighbour could walk through. So Oswin sat at his table by the north window for a whole winter, with his pen never leaving the vellum.

He had one companion, a grey cat called Ysolde, who believed the parchment was hers and the ink was a sort of weather. Each morning she sat on the corner of the table and watched the line creep along the coast, over the hills, and down past the salt marshes. Oswin began to make his lines with her in mind. When she turned her head, he curved the stroke to follow her ears. When she flicked her tail, he gave the river a little twist to match it. The king grumbled that the map looked more like a cat than a kingdom, but he had no way to prove it, since the line never once broke.
In the thaw, Oswin reached the last hill and found he had nowhere left to go. The line had to close, and it would only close at the place where it began. Ysolde climbed onto the page, settled herself exactly over the spot, and looked back over her shoulder at him. Oswin drew the final curve around her and stopped, and where his pen rested there was a small dark dot. The king came to inspect the map and found his kingdom had one border after all, and it was round the cat.
