Cat portrait in a leaf wreath on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A cat's head is shown facing forward with pointed ears, detailed eyes and a soft muzzle, rendered in fine linework and stippled shading. It sits within a loose wreath of leaves and small stems that curves beneath the chin and along the sides of the design. The tattoo is in black and grey on pale skin, photographed against a white brick wall with the subject's dark shirt visible at the edge of the frame.

Sergeant came with the fair the way the generator did, and nobody remembered signing for him. He sat on the coconut shy counter in Lincoln like a tax inspector, eyes half shut, and every stallholder swore he had counted their takings. By October the rain had made everything smell of wet canvas and diesel, and Mr Aske was talking about selling the rides to a man in Skegness.

I was the one who wove the ivy. Each evening I cut trails from the hedge behind the car park and bent them into rings for the girls on the waltzer to wear, and Sergeant would climb onto the stack of crates and bat at the stems until the whole thing unravelled. He never once ate a leaf. He just liked to watch me start again, tilting his head the way my nan used to when I got a sum wrong.

The night the fair packed up for good, I found him curled inside the last wreath on the back step of the caravan, a ring of leaves with a cat in the middle, ears flat against the cold. Mr Aske said the farm would take him. I said he was coming with me, and Mr Aske looked at the cat, then at me, and laughed so hard he had to sit down on a bale of straw.

We drove north in the lorry with the cat on my lap and the wreath on the dashboard, its leaves going brown at the edges. Sergeant didn't flinch at the motorway noise. Somewhere past Newark he stood up, turned three times on my knee and settled again, as if the whole road had been arranged for his comfort. I still have that wreath. It hangs over my kitchen door, and he still sleeps beneath it.
