Hummingbird silhouette on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of a hummingbird in flight, with its wings raised and a long, thin beak pointing to the right. The shape is filled with black ink with soft, slightly feathered edges and no interior detail. The bird sits on pale skin against a blurred grey background, and the image is framed tightly on the forearm.

Dear Tomasz, the big top came down on Tuesday and nobody bothered to say goodbye to the ring. I walked it alone at dusk, past the stacked seats and the hay bales gone grey with rain, and I thought of you on the trapeze, always reaching for the bar a half second before it arrived. Mrs Okonkwo has the last of the tent poles in her yard in Dudley now. She says she will sell them by the foot to anyone who asks, which is more than the council ever offered us.

The bird that Lenny kept in the caravan died in March, you will remember. He did not tell anyone for a week. The hummingbird cage was the only thing he would not let the bailiffs touch, so we carried it out to the field behind the fairground and let the little thing go in the afternoon sun. It did not fly away at first. It hung over the wet grass, wings going so fast they blurred into nothing, then it turned its long thin beak towards the hedge and was gone before any of us could say a word.
I keep thinking of it as I pack my things. Lenny drew its outline on a napkin that night, all wings and needle beak, and said it was the only thing in the whole show that had ever flown without a net. I have it folded in my coat pocket now. Write to me at the old address in Leicester if the post still reaches it. Tell me whether the wire is still strung across the paddock, and whether anyone has tried to walk it since we left.
Yours in the dust, Ines
