Cardinal tattoo on the wrist

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small red cardinal sits on a branch-like perch in profile, with its tail extending down towards the hand. The bird is shaded with soft gradients in red, with darker black detailing on the wing, head and feet and a yellow beak. The tattoo is centred on the wrist against a plain skin background, with a red surface behind the photographed hand.

The cardinal came to the switchboard window at ten to six, the same minute the milk lorry turned in at the bottom of Mill Lane, and it sat on the sill with its tail hanging over the drop like a dropped ribbon. Nobody in Halden Creek believed a bird could keep appointments, but you had stopped arguing with the town years ago. Your board had sixty plugs, a ledger with a cracked spine, and a pencil behind your ear that Mrs Gorse said was unbecoming.

Everything passed through that room eventually. Mrs Pruitt's boy was going to Korea. The Dunnings had sold the mill to men from Ohio. Evelyn Cole rang the doctor three nights running and then rang nobody at all. You wrote the important ones in the ledger between the sign-in codes and told no one, which is how you knew the Harrow girl met the Greer boy by the reservoir gate on Thursdays, and why you were the one who rang the Harrow house on the Thursday the rain came in sideways and said the bridge was out.

The storm took the north line for nine days. The board went dead except for its hum, and you sat with your hands in your lap while the cardinal kept coming to the sill, red as a struck match against the frost, watching you as if you owed it a conversation.

On the tenth morning the crew got the wire back up. The first light on the board was Evelyn Cole's, asking for the doctor, and you plugged her through, then wrote in the ledger: called, connected, the bird is still here. You pressed your palm flat to the cold glass, and it looked at you a long moment before it lifted off into the white.
