A close photograph of a hand with red painted nails, showing one finger with a tiny solid black bird silhouette on its side near the knuckle. The bird is a simple flat shape in black ink with no visible shading or fine detail. The framing is tight on the finger against a plain, pale background.

Dear Nell,

The gannet came back to the stern again this morning, the one with the torn left wing that we have started calling Mr Pask after the net-mender. It hung over the wake for an hour without once beating its wings, just tilting, and I thought of you on the quay with your shawl pulled up. Skipper says it only follows the gutting, but I know better. Birds have no interest in herring unless they are hungry, and he is never hungry, just tired like the rest of us.

We had a poor night off the Dogger. Eleven crans, and the nets came up full of weed. Ferris lost a glove over the side and swore for ten minutes, which Dad says is the most honest prayer a man can make at sea. The cook has started counting the tins again. I have been counting the days too, eighteen since the Hull landing, and I have got as far as the number of times I have read your last letter, which is more than I will admit to the crew.

When we come in on Thursday, I will walk up Coble Row before I go home, and if the light is right you will see me before I see you. Don't wave with a tea towel this time. Just stand where the gulls are thickest and I will know which one is you.

Yours, with salt in my ink, Tom
