The Harvest Fair packed up at Dunmere on Tuesday and we have been hauling south ever since, so this is scribbled on the back of a spare ticket roll with the caravan window jammed open against the diesel fumes. Mrs Okafor's cough is worse, Dale has lost another tooth on the waltzer, and the cook has finally admitted the gravy was never meant to be that colour.

You asked about the little black bird painted over the door of the dodgems office. Mr Pell did it the first spring, with a pot of ink he got off a sign-writer in Hull. Everyone takes it for a crow, but he insists it is a wren that flew into the ghost train in 1961 and never found the way out, so he gave it a tail held up like it has just been startled off a fence post.

Last Thursday the generator died halfway through the evening and the whole field went dark. Ivy, who sells candyfloss, swore she saw a small black shape hopping along the guy ropes ahead of her, leading her past the swings and round to the switch box behind the tea tent. When the lights came back on, the bird was sitting on the lid of the generator with its legs tucked under, looking extremely pleased with itself. Pell says it is only ink and cannot leave the wall. He has not checked the wall since.
