A small robin is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in profile with its head to the left. The bird is drawn with thin, delicate linework and soft shading in orange-red and brown. The hand is raised with dark navy nail polish, and the tattoo sits in the lower left of the frame against a wooden surface.

Mavis Tully had been told the Palais would shut at eleven, and by ten to she had already decided she would not be the first to leave. Dennis Carr had asked her to dance twice already and been refused twice, mostly because she liked the way he asked. Now he crossed the floor with two cups of orange squash, stepping carefully around the bird, which turned its head to watch him with one bright black eye. "It's been in here since the doors opened," he said. "Reckon it wants a dance too."

They danced the last number with the robin perched on the brass rail above them, its breast the colour of the lanterns strung along the balcony. When the lights came up, Dennis walked her to the bus stop on Chapel Street, and she kept the bird in her head the whole way, the way it had tilted at the music as if it knew the tune.

At the stop she found a folded paper tucked into her glove. It was a pencil sketch of a robin, head turned to the left, and beneath it in careful capitals he had written: SAME TIME NEXT FRIDAY. BRING YOUR OWN SQUASH.
