The ice on the far side of the Gelder Sound had cracked the spring the old ferryman's wife went out to the floes and never came back, so when the penguins came up the shore that autumn, the village of Harrow Nell said they were her sisters come to fetch the children home. Nobody believed it except Matilde Strand, who was nine and had a habit of believing things nobody else would.

She took a sack of dried herring down to the rocks each morning and sat with her back to the wind. The penguins did not care for herring. They cared for the spiral of blue-grey kelp that washed in under the jetty, and they pulled it apart with their beaks and wound it round their feet in slow loops, as if they were learning to write their names. Matilde tried to copy the loops in the sand with a stick. Her letters came out crooked. Theirs never did.

On the last day before the boats were hauled up, a small penguin walked up the slipway alone and stopped at her boots. It turned its head to one side, looked at her with one black eye, and then turned slowly, once, round on itself, tracing a curl in the wet stone. Matilde knelt down and drew the same curl with her finger, tail to head, the way the kelp had been wound.

The penguin waddled off into the surf. In the morning the sea was flat and the rocks were empty, and the spiral she had drawn was still there, dried white on the stone, and she did not rub it out.
