Small ghost tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a cartoon ghost with arms outstretched and a simple face sits on the inner wrist of a pale-skinned arm. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ghost is the only subject. The photo is taken against a dark background, with the hand raised at the top of the frame.

Tuesday. Still no one has screamed at me, which the handbook says is a sign of poor technique rather than a sign that the village is brave. Mr Pargeter walked straight through me at the post office this morning, carrying a tray of parcels, and then apologised to the parcels.

I have practised the arms-out lunge from the top of the churchyard wall for three weeks. It is meant to say BOO. What it actually says, from the children's point of view, is "Oh, hello, have you seen my hat?" Which is how Edna Flint came to knit me a scarf. She left it folded on the wall with a custard cream on top, and a note that said, "You look chilly, dear." I am not chilly. I am made of mist. But I have worn it every evening since, and the wind off the orchard has never once got past it.
The scarf is far too long for a sheet and far too short for anything respectable, so I have taken to wearing it looped twice around nothing at all. It seems to suit the apple trees. Their branches are heavy with fruit now and they creak like old men when the wind comes through, and I think they are trying to be frightening too, and failing in exactly the same way.
Tonight I will try the lunge at the bus shelter. I will probably just wave. Edna says waving is how people say hello to someone they've decided to keep.
