The relief boat should have come on Tuesday. By Thursday the tins were down to peaches and the lamp oil had a gritty sound in the reservoir when I topped it up. I kept the log the way Mr Pell taught me forty years back: time, wind, pressure, visibility, and then the typewriter, an Imperial with a sticky E, carried up the spiral stairs each morning so the damp wouldn't get into the ribbon.

On Friday the rain came sideways off the Skerries and the glass dropped so fast the needle chattered. I sat with the machine on my knees and typed the wind, then the sea state, then nothing. The carriage stood still. I could not think what a keeper was for, if not the light, and the light was only a lamp I had to keep burning for men who might already be drowned.
So I typed the only thing I was sure of. I am. Two words, then a full stop struck hard enough to dent the paper, the way Pell used to hit it when a ship cleared the rocks. Written down it looked like an ordinary entry, something a man could check against the tide tables.
Saturday morning the fog lifted and there was the Ada Vail, hull riding lower than it should, coming in on the flood. I wound the lamp by hand, a second winding after the first, and when I looked at the log again the line was still there, straight across the page in its neat black letters, waiting for the next one.
