You reach Dry Creek with the radiator steaming and your phone dead on the passenger seat, and the only open door belongs to the Sunset Diner. Behind the counter a slice of pizza sits under a heat lamp, its cheese sagging in long, glossy drips. The woman working the till, Marisol Pike, has a strip of red tape knotted in her hair and a hand-lettered card by the register that reads: Fixed prices. No refunds on love.

She says the slice is called the Affair. Her husband Dell ordered one every Friday for thirty years from the same stool by the window, and he never once finished it. He would eat the first two points, then sit and watch the rest go cold while he talked about the road, the trucks, the way the mesa turned purple at dusk. When he died, she kept the lamp on and the recipe on the wall, because somebody had to keep the two hearts on the board honest.

You eat standing up, cheese scalding your tongue, and realise the van will not move before dark. So you sit down on Dell's stool. Marisol slides a second slice across the counter without asking and says it is on the house, because that is the only way an affair ever ends well in this town.

By the time the sun drops behind the mesa, the diner's neon has flickered on and the highway has turned the colour of rust. In the morning a mechanic will fix the van for less than you feared. The only thing you carry north is a sticky smear of cheese on your sleeve, and a stubborn wish to know how Dell's Friday stories ended.
