Two photos of black lettering tattoos: 'I'm fine' on the outer thigh and 'save me' on the lower leg, both in a handwritten script style.

I'm fine and save me lettering on legs

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The top photo shows the words 'I'm fine' tattooed in black, handwritten-style lettering on the outer thigh above the knee, with the letters set at angles. The bottom photo shows 'save me' in similar black script on the lower leg near the ankle, with the foot raised and the words appearing rotated. Both are simple single-colour lettering with no shading, set against plain indoor backgrounds.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Winter had settled on the lorries outside Doncaster, and the big top had more patches than canvas. Nell sat on an upturned crate in Fenwick's caravan while the tattooist wiped his needles on a grey rag and quoted a pound a letter. Mr Pellew paid for the season's ink out of the takings, which were not what they had been, and he never asked what the girls wanted written.

'Two words on the one leg,' Oona said, hitching her tights up. 'And two on the other.'

Nell had worked out the arrangement on the back of a playbill. 'I'm fine' meant the act was going to plan, the net was tight, and the ringmaster was sober. 'Save me' meant come now, whatever the cue. They had agreed it over cold chips and never once said it aloud in front of the horses. Fenwick's needle buzzed, and Nell watched the ink settle into her skin and thought of Oona's rope swinging above the sawdust.

Eleven days later Pellew sold the last of the ponies to a farmer near Selby and locked the takings box, the key on a bootlace round his neck. Nell waited in the wings with her palms sticky with rosin. When the spotlight swung up to the high bar, Oona hung there in the glare and called out, 'I'm fine,' bright enough for the crowd to clap, and Nell heard the other message beneath it as clearly as a bell. She slipped out through the stable gate in her socks, crossed the frozen mud to the lorry, and found Oona already in the cab with the engine ticking over and the keys in her fist.
