White ink flowers and vines on a foot

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot with a tattoo of small blossoms, leaves and curling vines in white ink across the top and side. The linework is thin and the flowers are simply outlined with some interior detail, so the design reads as a pale, tonal pattern on the skin. The dark fabric behind the foot makes the light ink stand out, and the composition sits the design diagonally from the toes up towards the ankle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learned the names of the flats from the lift, not from the letters on the doors. Fourteenth floor, Mrs Adeyemi's moonflowers climbing through the balcony railings, pale as milk teeth against the dark brick. Nobody on the estate grew anything that didn't come from a bag off the market stall, so people stopped to look. The flowers opened only after the sodium lights came on, and by morning they had folded themselves shut, edges faintly bruised.

The lift had been out since March, so every Sunday you climbed the stairwell with a trowel in your coat pocket. Mrs Adeyemi let you snip one vine for the windowsill of the flat where your brother was learning to sleep through the trains. She talked while you worked, about her husband who had laid the first bricks of this place, about how the council promised everything and delivered letters. Then one week the letter came that said the balconies were to be cleared for the works by the end of the month.

She didn't cry. She wrapped cuttings in damp newspaper, pressed the bundle into your hands and said, "Take them down. Plant them where someone will have to look up."

You put them in a cracked tub beside the bus shelter on Lodge Road, and for a week nobody noticed. Then one evening a woman waiting for the 37 stopped scrolling, leaned over the tub and stayed there while the light went blue and the flowers opened one by one, white in the dusk, until the bus came and she missed it.
