He arrived on the last cart before the drifts, a thin man with paint under his nails and a case of brushes wrapped in oilcloth, and asked for a room at the back where the light was good. Father would have had him out by supper, but Mrs Oakes gave him the room over the taproom and a bowl of broth, and he has been working ever since.

He has lettered the new window of the parlour in black, a neat hand, the sort that makes you want to read it twice. Two words only, I'm fine, so the coachmen can see it from the road and stop worrying about us. I helped hold the ladder. He painted it backwards on the inside of the glass so it reads true from the street, which I did not understand until I went out into the yard and looked back at the house.

Last night he asked me to fetch the stepladder again. Under the lintel, where only someone coming down the back stairs would look up, he had written something else in the same careful black. Save me. He would not say who it was for. He only smiled and said that a sign is a kind of promise, and a promise is only worth what the reader makes of it.

This morning the road was cleared. He was gone before the bell, and the cart left a long set of tracks I can still see from my window, sharp as a pencil line across the white.
