"i'm fine" lettering on skin
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows black handwritten lettering reading "i'm fine" on smooth skin, with the words in a looping, slanted script. A hand with pale mint nail polish and a silver ring points to the tattoo from the lower left. The background is dark and out of focus, and the warm skin tones contrast with the solid black ink.

Dear Ada, the big top came down in Swindon on Tuesday, sheet by sheet, and Mrs Pell the elephant went off in a lorry to a farm outside Bideford. I am writing from the back of Hollis's van, where the canvas smells of diesel and wet sawdust, to tell you I am fine. You will read that and know it for the lie it is, because you taught me to write my letters that way when we were girls, the words leaning over like they are trying to catch a falling thing.

The wages stopped in March. Mr Corrigan says the money is coming from a man in Leeds who wants to buy the name, and that when the name is sold we will all be paid in full, with interest. He has said this in four towns now. Last Saturday we played a car park behind a Homebase in Hereford to eleven people, and nine of them were waiting for the toilets. Hollis sold the tent poles to a scrapyard for the price of a used Fiesta. He cried over them first, then went to the chippy.
I kept the rigging. Nobody asked for it, and nobody will buy it, but I coiled the practice line on the old wooden drum and tucked it under the seat of my caravan, and every night I climb the bars in the empty field to keep my hands from forgetting. Tonight the moon came up square over the hedge and I hung there a long while, looking at the lamp in the farmhouse window across the road, thinking of your kitchen.
Don't send money. Send the blue thread you kept from the wedding dress, and a stamp. I will sew the blue into the hem of my coat, where it will sit under all the other things I have not said, and when the Leeds man finally comes I will be standing at the gate, fine, as promised.
