Iceland outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of the island of Iceland sits on the inner wrist, with the hand visible at the top of the frame. The thin black linework is clean and even, with no shading inside the outline, leaving the skin tone to show through. The monochrome photograph has a soft grey background and a close, centred composition.

The slate in the surveyor's hut has been wiped so many times that the coast of the island has gone ghostly, and you are the one who must trace it again before the morning shift. Hrafn says the line has to be right or the men won't trust the map underground. He hands you a stub of carpenter's pencil and tells you to start at the north-west headland, where the fjords cut in like torn cloth.

The mine is not much of a mine any more. The seam ran thin two winters back, and men in grey cars come up the valley road to talk about ore prices elsewhere. Their voices carry in the canteen. You keep your head down and work the southern shore, the long curve where the glacier once reached the sea, measuring each bay with the same patience your grandmother used on wool.

When the last bay is done, Hrafn stands behind you for a long time without speaking. Then he takes the wet cloth and wipes the whole slate clean except the outline, which stays dark while the inside fades to pale chalk dust. He tells you the edge is the only part anyone ever reads.

At the bottom of the hill you press your thumb to the harbour wall and feel the island's shape there in the cold stone, rough and exact, exactly where you left it.
