The lift is out again, so I walked up all twenty-two floors with the shopping and your postcard from Lisbon in my coat pocket, reading it on every landing like a hymn. Mr Okafor from flat 14 carried the bag of tins the last six, and insisted on telling me about his brother's bakery in Lagos, which I did not ask for and enjoyed enormously.

Your nan's old atlas is still on the bottom shelf where you left it. I took it down last night and tried to find the places you keep mentioning, Valparaiso, Tbilisi, a village in Laos with a name I cannot pronounce. The book has gone soft from being opened. The coastlines have turned grey where my thumb rests on them. I traced the whole thing with a biro the way you used to when you were eight, sitting on the carpet with your tongue poking out, and I thought, that child is crossing the Atlantic without me now.

Don't feel you have to write often. I know the wifi in those hostels is a rumour. But when you do, tell me the one thing the postcards leave out: the smell of the place at six in the morning, what the bread costs, who you talked to. I'll read it out to the window while the wind comes up off the car park and the lights of the estate blink on below, one by one, like someone counting.
