World map outline on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and wrist are shown from the palm side, with a black outline tattoo of a world map across the inner wrist. The continents are drawn as thin, unshaded contour lines with no fill, and the lines look slightly soft at the edges. The ink is black on skin, with a green knitted sleeve and a thin striped bracelet in the frame against a dark, gravelly ground.

Dear Tomasz, The lamp at Carrick Ness was lit again on Tuesday, though the wick had gone to soot and I had to scrape it clean with my thumbnail, which your mother would have scolded me for. The chart you posted from Liverpool arrived wrapped in oilcloth, and I have pinned it above the kettle where the damp cannot reach it.

You drew the coastlines in fine pencil with no shading, no hatching, nothing to say whether the land was green or grey. I asked the postman's boy what he thought and he said it looked as if someone had walked round the edges of the world with a wet finger. I have been tracing them since. Every night after the watch I go over the line of Ireland with the same nib, so the edges stay sharp in the salt air. The sea I leave white.
The sea was never the trouble. Last month the Mary Ellen came in off the Sound with her rudder gone and a boy aboard who swore he had been to Lisbon. He pointed at the chart and put his finger on a place I had never thought to mark, a bay no bigger than a thumbnail, and said that was where his mother lived. I told him the chart was only lines. He said that was why it worked.
I am sending the chart back with this, since you will want it for the next sheet, and I have traced the coast so often there is hardly any paper left at the corners. The log says the light held steady all winter. Come home by spring and bring more ink. Your loving aunt, Ruth.
