A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tram had gone grinding up Byres Road by the time Mr Okafor turned the lamp down over the copper plates, and I was still inking the edge of Greenland. He liked his coastlines thin. A line you can barely see, he said, lets the sea breathe. I had been at the bench since six, tracing from a shipping office atlas that smelled of pipe smoke and wet coats, and my hand had grown too sure of itself.

When I came to Africa I went too quickly. The needle slid past the Horn and kept going, a hair's width east, into a stretch of ocean that did not belong to anyone. I held my breath. Okafor came over in his cardigan, looked at the plate for a long time, and said nothing at all. Then he took a loupe from his pocket and pointed at the mistake as though it were a fine vein in marble.

We should have scraped it out. Instead he had me print a proof, pulled it slowly through the press, and laid it on the table to dry. The sheet came up with the world on it exactly as I had drawn it, my stray line sitting in the Indian Ocean like a stowaway who had decided the voyage was his own idea.

He kept that proof pinned above the sink for years, and I never once corrected it. Some nights, when the presses are quiet and the window fogs with the river's cold, I still think of that little coast I invented, the one place on any map that only exists because a boy's hand got ahead of his eye.
