Your letter about the damp on the eleventh floor landing arrived on Tuesday, folded inside a sandwich bag, which I took as a comment on the lift. I have read it twice, once standing in the corridor and once on the bench by the bins, where the light is better. You say the repairs are "scheduled to proceed in due course". I have been living under due course since 2011, and it has never once knocked.

I should tell you that I have stopped waiting for things to be mended and started growing them instead. The window boxes on the balcony now hold runner beans, three kinds of mint and a marigold that Mrs Okafor from 11B swears is trying to climb into her flat. The ceiling in my kitchen has a brown map of somewhere I have never been, and I have pinned a fern beneath it, which is doing better than the boiler. The lift still smells of wet cardboard, but the lilies by the stairwell are magnificent, and nobody has asked me to file a form for them.

You will send an inspector on Thursday between nine and five. I will be out. I will be at the allotment on Dunmore Road, where the sweetcorn does not need a reference number and the rain, when it comes, falls on everyone equally. Leave your clipboard with the caretaker and tell him the key is under the terracotta pot shaped like a frog. He will know it by the bramble that has grown through the letterbox.

If the ceiling comes down while I am gone, please water the basil.
